KASADORI STREET AND ESSA DANCERS

The other day we decided to take a day trip to Kasadori Street to see the Essa dancers. We had a lot of fun and the dancing and music was great!
Clayton ready to go...

We need to buy Clayton a hat like this!

Need an umbrella?

Shi-Sa (Shi-Shi)- Shi-Sa dogs are from an integral part of Okinawan culture. Also known as Shi-Shi, these small statues can be found standing guard on top of roofs or at the entrance to homes, businesses and shops all over Okinawa. The Shi-Sa was first brought to Okinawa from China in the 14th century. These figures are believed to ward off evil spirits and were originally used as guardians to residences and shrines. Shi-Sa come in all shapes, colors and sizes. Most homes will display two Shi-Sa. One with its mouth closed to keep the good spirits in and one with the mouth open to scare off the evil spirits.

Yum...

Real frog purses...FUN!

I think of you a lot Kaleena. I see Hello Kitty and think..KALEENA!! LOL!

Habu sake is a liquor that comes to Okinawa from China, where the snake is known for its medicinal properties Historically, the Okinawan people believed it gave them strong stamina. The name “habu sake” is actually a misnomer. It is not sake at all; it’s awamori, a stronger liquor created through a distilling process of rice. Awamori is a clear liquor that has been aged. Habu sake, because of the herbs and honey that some producers add, is a yellowish color. The most expensive blends also come with habu snakes inside. (As we have pictured below.) You can buy these for between $100-$1000 dollars depending on the amount of alcohol and the size of the snake inside.

We took pictures of two of the Essa Dancing groups. A younger group and a older one. Both groups danced AMAZINGLY! We will post a video in the next day or two.

Just hanging out listening to the beat of the drums.

Some of the cross walks here are really neat! They will stop traffic in ALL directions and then people can cross diagonally or just straight to the other sides.
